Joe Torres, CFP with Merrill Lynch at 900 South Avenue spoke of the importance of civic engagement. "Whether it be a sole practitioner or the head of a large corporation, the progression to success is enhanced by that individual's willingness and ability to promote the quality of his or her community.", says Torres, "In doing so, the business owner demonstrates three crucial elements while earning the public's trust and patronage:
1) Integrity: When investing time and resources to protect pubic values and promote positive change, it demonstrates a commitment to place the needs of others first.
2) Leadership: When a positive outcome prevails, a community of consumers takes notice of the business owner's ability to produce results, seeing that individual as one who 'gets things done'.
3) Connectivity: As many of us were advised by our parents during childhood to 'stay with the good kids' while in the playground, that concept is even more critical in adult society. Being perceived as being accepted and recognized within respected spheres of influence and leadership is a major attribute for a businessperson looking to attract the attention of highly discriminating consumers."
Joe outlined a broad spectrum of government leadership ranging from our federal representatives to local government, law enforcement and public advocates. "More so now, our focus is increasingly drawn to D.C. politics. Granted, it is important to be aware of how we are affected by federal legislation, we should not overlook the impact local government has on our families, our businesses and our day to day lives." He continues: "Decisions pertaining to education, public safety, transportation and qualify of life ordinances are made on a local level. My recommendation to the business owner whose time is limited but wishes to become more civically engaged is to contact his or her local Council or Assembly Person. Their districts are far less populous than those in higher office, so they will be accessible." Joe explained that our local public officials welcome communication from sincere, credible emerging business leaders within their districts. Joe wrapped up by sharing advice he received early in his career by a seasoned colleague: "Regardless of industry, market or business size, successful business owners are inspired by the prospect of earning the recognition by their community as the go-to authority in their respective industry. Once the designation of 'trusted expert' is earned, the effort then shifts to preserving that trust and confidence while also making time to encourage and mentor the next generation of leadership. Civic engagement is an excellent platform upon which to build".
